"Internet and Social Media's Change In Human Psychology.”
Updated: Jan 16
With social interaction being positively correlated with happiness, you’d think human beings would be the happiest we’ve ever been. Yet, we’re lonelier than ever. Those under 25 years old reported being the loneliest generation — those who grew up with social media as an integral part of life.
*Titles with arrows to the left are expandable poems related to the topic with more personal perspective.
"I am disconnected." Pt.1
Ma March 4th 2022 outgoing call 12:28PM 1hour and 11 minutes
Ma told me she knew sumn or somebody was holding me back. She knew what it was.
I was first confused by the comment but it steered me right. She seemed to have had all the ideas of who I am.
As I try to continue to live on even when I feel stuck. Everyday is a new day. With new problems. New things will make you feel that way.
But accepting these things are what makes life come full circle. I didn’t know it before but Ma told me she knew sumn
was going on.
I am disconnected.
"Emotionally Tethered." Pt. 2
A relationship.
Like one cord that must detach itself to atone to another device. A tether of disassociation. I was disconnected.
I had learned to sit with feelings and be okay when others are not okay.
“The thing abt you is you detach like a snap of a finger when it’s something that disrupts you. It’s like a switch.”
I didn’t know Ma thought of me in that way. To keep it real witchu —
I have dark places in my past.
My feelings grew walls
Acceptance.
I was in eryka’s window seat.
Ready and waiting to finally remove myself and take a ride.
Just to feel something like the sun on my face felt like a step away from everything.
We all want a window seat from time to time just to get away.
"Social apps provide a sense of belonging, a means to show the world who we are. On the surface, social media makes us feel connected, even if we haven’t left our cave in days.
Humans have evolved to live, work, and play amongst one another. We need social interaction to survive."
"We’re now shopping through apps, using them to propagate activism, and building our personal platforms. Moreover, we’re getting more and more of our news from social media, as 48 percent of American adults under thirty say that social media is their go to news source."
- A report from June 30 2020 @ Pew Research Center
‘Americans who mainly get their news from social media are less engaged, less knowledgeable.’
The same rule applies to information vs news.
As the world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, the potential for cybercrime grows, and individuals and organizations are susceptible.
-The rise of social media has led to a new form of self-presentation, where individuals are able to craft and maintain a carefully curated online persona that may differ significantly from their offline self. This can result in feelings of pressure to conform to social norms and expectations, leading to anxiety, low self-esteem, and other mental health issues.
-Moreover, the digital world has also led to changes in the way people think, process information, and make decisions.
Linked to decreased ability to focus, retain information, make decisions, and increased stress.
Decency and Copyright Acts with context of social media content provide more protection for platforms than the their users.
Note that this creation has exposed humans and made them unstable, allowing the point of curated protection from it.
"Cybersecurity has been and will continue to be a critical aspect of our ever-evolving digital landscape. However, while technology and infrastructure play a crucial role in safeguarding against cybercrime, the human psyche can prove to be a formidable adversary. As research has shown, human error remains a leading cause of data breaches and cyberattacks, thus highlighting the significance of cyber-psychology in the context of cybersecurity.”
Although tech can show human’s best interest at heart, it doesn’t negate the fact that tech is fighting against itself and aids even further to a human’s dependency on it. Does natural survival instinct live here?
Not when humanity itself leads to a system's instability. The worst part is that there are physical, emotional, and mental consequences to suffer from.
There is no sustainability where there is no room for “error.” Human error.
With this relationship being similar to oil & water, the lack of clear, unbiased, foundational information can give Policy and other government practices too much power over our individuality. There is critical power in individually!
This is a power struggle.
Our job needs to be "Each One, Teach One." to be stronger together. Retrieve our own information and find the value in our differences. We all experience the same things, but in different ways. Acceptance and understanding brings clarity to all things but the first step is to educate yourself. There is never one right answer or one right opinion. There is only yours, which is important to the personal experience and living amongst each other's realities. An absolute universality/one size fits all has critical issues.
"Affirming that indigenous peoples are equal to all other peoples, while recognizing the right of all peoples to be different, to consider themselves different, and to be respected as such,
Affirming also that all peoples contribute to the diversity and richness of civilizations and cultures, which constitute the common heritage of humankind."
"Affirming further that all doctrines, policies and practices based on or advocating superiority of peoples or individuals on the basis of national origin or racial, religious, ethnic or cultural differences are racist, scientifically false, legally invalid, morally condemnable and socially unjust."
